Nephrectomy

Nephrectomy is the procedure of this disease which has total two types of nephrectomy:

1) Radical nephrectomy
2) Partial nephrectomy

During this radical nephrectomy, the urologic surgeon removes the entire kidney and often some additional structures, such as part of the duct connecting the kidney to the bladder or other adjacent structures such as the adrenal gland or lymph nodes.

In this partial nephrectomy, also called kidney-sparing surgery, the surgeon removes diseased tissue from the kidney and leaves healthy tissue in place. This is how a partial nephrotomy works.

A nephrectomy is often performed to treat kidney cancer or to remove a non-cancerous tumor. In some cases, a nephrectomy is performed to treat a diseased or severely damaged kidney.

A urologic surgeon can perform a nephrectomy through a single incision in the abdomen or flank, such as an open nephrectomy, or through a series of small incisions in the abdomen using a camera and small instruments including laparoscopic nephrectomy.
