Prostate Cancer

Day by day the cases of cancer are increasing alarmingly. Multiple treatments are currently available. A lot of research is being done which regularly leads to the discovery of new treatments.

The hormone testosterone is the fuel for prostate cancer and reducing its levels and effects in the body is the cornerstone of treatment. This is done either through surgery or through regular injections. Then different types of therapy are taken for this type of cancer.

Chemotherapy – which in combination with hormonal therapy has been shown to prolong this survival.

Radiation – This radiation therapy is used to treat symptoms, especially for bone pain.

Targeted therapy – These new drugs target specific mutations in cancer cells to slow their growth.

Therapeutic radioligands – This new technique involves labeling PSMA with radioactive molecules to target and destroy cancer cells.

Types of prostate cancer are as follows

Adenocarcinoma of the prostate. Adenocarcinomas develop in the prostate gland and the glandular cells that line the ducts of the prostate gland.

Transitional cell carcinoma of the prostate.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the prostate.

Small cell prostate cancer.

Symptoms of prostate cancer are as follows.

Persistent weight loss and appetite are common.

Bone pain and anemia are common with bone involvement.

Weakness or paralysis may occur if the spine is involved and requires immediate treatment.

Jaundice from liver involvement.

Cough with lung involvement.

Local symptoms related to prostate such as decrease in urine flow or obstruction in urine, blood in urine etc. may be seen.

Kidney obstruction and renal failure may be seen.
