Jaw Cancer

Jaw cancer is a rare type of head and neck cancer. The average age of those diagnosed with oral cancer is 63. Only 20% of cases occur in patients younger than 55 years of age. However, it can affect anyone. There are several known risk factors that can increase your risk of oral cancer. It often happens when cancer of the oral cavity spreads to the jawbone. Most jaw cancers are benign, meaning they have not spread to other parts of the body.

This type of cancer that spreads from the mouth or oral cavity to the jaw. It sometimes originates in the jaw, but this is less common. Experts generally consider jaw cancer to be a rare form of head and neck cancer, accounting for about 5% of cancers in the United States.

Tumors in the jaw bone are said to be odontogenic i.e. related to tooth formation. They can be either benign i.e. non-cancerous or malignant i.e. cancerous.

Unlike other head and neck cancers, which can be very difficult to detect, mandibular and hard palate cancers are different: they can usually be seen or felt by you, your doctor or dentist. And even if you don't have any symptoms, they will show up on routine dental X-rays.
